On behalf of the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii, our warmest congratulations on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Noguchi Medical Research Institute.
With the outstanding leadership of Mr. Yoshihisa Asano, President and CEO, and the able and strong support of its Board of Directors, the Noguchi Medical Research Institute is world renown for its concern for human welfare. A study of the life of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, the namesake of the Institute, clearly reveals a man of vision in his concern for humanity.
To this day, Dr. Noguchi's values continue to influence scientists, especially young physicians, who are being trained and educated to make this world a better and safer place in which to live. Dr. Noguchi's spirit continues to inspire young men and women to provide health care so that we can achieve health for all, regardless of where we find ourselves globally. His life works exemplify the belief that through hard work the world can be a safer and better place in which to live.
Dr. Noguchi's relationship with the United States began when he moved from Japan in 1900. His influences extended internationally and included extensive travels to Central and South America where he conducted research on Oroya fever, poliomyelitis, and trachoma.
Currently, Dr. Noguchi's efforts have filtered to the recipients of the Noguchi Foundation fellowships. Each year the Foundation supports young physicians to continue their skills in medicine, with studies abroad. The University of Hawaii's school of medicine has hosted many fellows. These outstanding participants come to observe various American health delivery systems. Some continue their training by applying for medical, surgical, or pediatric Residencies and Fellowships in the United States.
As Dr. Noguchi envisioned, these young physicians, through medicine, are truly ambassadors of goodwill with the unwavering belief that medicine, science and health have no boundaries. Good health is a right for all human beings.
We salute the Noguchi Medical Research Institutes for perpetuating the legacy of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi. Our best wishes and successes for many more years until we have truly eradicated human sufferings caused by illness and poor health.
Aloha,
